Diabetes can impact your eyes in ways that aren’t always obvious, sometimes leading to temporary or permanent vision changes. That’s why annual eye exams are essential for anyone living with diabetes — and they’re covered by Manitoba Health at any age.

Some advanced testing may be recommended to fully assess eye health, and these tests are not covered by Manitoba Health. We’ll always walk you through what’s needed and why, so there are no surprises.

A comprehensive diabetic eye exam can help detect diabetes and identify diabetes-related eye conditions, including:

  • Full or partial paralysis of the muscles that move the eyes

  • Diabetic retinopathy (bleeding within the eye)

  • Reduced corneal sensitivity

  • Vision changes

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataracts
